Isn’t Mexico entirely filled up with drug dealers right now? Will I get kidnapped?

As most of the travelers know, it is the media's duty to report on the most extreme cases and promote sensationalism -- that's how they make their money after all!  Within the body of 40,000 travelers who converse daily on the Expedition Portal, there has not been one account of an overlander who has had serious issues while traveling overland through Mexico.  For more "real-life" accounts of traveling in Mexico, here are a couple of recent posts:

How Will the Maya Rally Benefit the Region?

In addition to the tourism dollars spent by our participants, the Maya Rally is dedicated to doing as much as possible for the residents, business, and civic institutions of the traditionally Mayan cultural area.  A portion of all proceeds raised by the Maya Rally will be donated to a local organization in charge of maintaining/restoring the Maya sites.

Once the details of this partnership are finalized, a press release will be issued, and more information will be published here on MayaRally.com

What About Unregistered Participants Tagging Along?

Nothing really stops anyone from enjoying some travel time with companions through Latin America, as it's a free world and there are no private routes.  However, no unregistered personnel will be allowed to enter the final camp area for the grand EOTW party.

Quite the bummer, eh, after driving 3000 miles?  We think so.

What Vehicle Equipment is Required?

The Maya Rally does not require anything specific. Not equipment for recoveries, not for speed, not for safety, not for communications... not even a requirement to bring beer.  (Although we think you'd be crazy to not keep plenty handy.)

It is up to each participating team to decide what they believe is required for an end of the world trip through Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala, then bring that.  Part of the fun of this event, is that if you find yourself without something you didn't know you'd need, it will be up to you and your wits to find a way to overcome that challenge.

What Kind of Vehicle Must I Have?

Choose one or none of the following:

SUV, van, sports car, Prius, moto, convertible, old pickup, taxi, or tuk-tuk.

Is our point well-made yet?  There is no right vehicle.  We encourage you to be prepared for anything, and we encourage you to be creative, inventive, and inspiring with your decision.  (There very well could be bonus points involved.)
